You certainly do not need my, or anyone's permission to do as you please. I was merely trying to suggest that there are clubs out there who would embrace your entuhusiasm for the model, and who could welcome new faces.
I do see a fractioning in the Saab community here in the USA. Where we should be trying to pool resources, and keep things moving, people want to split off into their own little groups, because they do not believe that there is any acceptance of their Saab in the existing clubs.
Poppycock! The national and regional Saab clubs want to have ALL Saabs represented. There is nothing in their bylaws restricting membership to owners of specific models. If the 99s are under represented, it's because the 99 owners out there have not tried hard enough to make their presence known or have preconcieved notions about wether they will be accepted.
Steve Goldberger, Publisher of NINES had been on the lookout for quite a while for someone to write about the 99 and Classic 900. Almost a year ago, I started writing 'Classic Corner', a regular column about the 99 and C900 for Nines. There was nothing prior, because nobody wanted to write for Nines! On the other hand, there have always been writers willing to bang the keyboard for Vintage Saabs, and there's plenty of press stuff to cover the new cars.
I've often thought of the 99 as the 'lost Saab' because once the turbos came out, peoople mostly forgot about the other 99s that were made. I'm with you on the need for more recognition of the model. I just think it can be done most effectively - at the start - by working with the existing clubs.
My goal is to build up the Saab community to something approaching the stature and recognition of the clubs of other European enthusiast marques. We do that best by working together, not splitting into tiny little closed groups.
And yes, there probably are 100 or more Sonetts in the NESC. My club represents ALL Saab models. There are 99s, 9000s, Classic 900s, 9-3s and 9-5s.
