Support the existing clubs first! Posted by Larry West [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: New England 99 Club, Kevin, Thu, 21 Mar 2002 19:22:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Before we go forming another club that will never reach critical mass, and end up with one guy and an e-mail address, I strongly suggest that the 99 owners out there support the existing Saab clubs.
In New England, the New England Saab Accociation (NESA) has a slate of events already scheduled for 2002 and beyond.
If you're looking in other areas, the Saab Club of North America has a list http://www.saabclub.com/clubs.htm, as does the Saab USA website (http://www.saabusa.com).
Of course, you sould also join the Saab Club of North America (http://www.saabclub.com). Recently incorporated, the SCNA aims to be a national focus for all of the local clubs, to help organize things on a national level, and streamline things like getting event insurance, publicity, etc.
The Saab club community sometimes gets too fractured, so that it has yet to achieve the national status of the Porsche, BMW, Corvette and other marque or model clubs. Heck, DeLorean owners get more respect!
I believe it's vital that we all work together to make a strong national presence for the Saab marque in the collector or club arena.
There are many other benefits to working with the established clubs. They've already got web hosting established, mailing, phones, money handling (in many cases) and often a newsletter. All that stuff takes time and effort to get going. And, things get cheaper the more people you have involved. For example, the overhead on a bank account is much cheaper per capita on 200 members than it is on 20.
At some point, perhaps when the 99 enthusiasts number 100 or so, there could be a 'chapter' formed to address specifically the 99 model. But until then, I believe it's better to work within an existing club.
Certainly get out there and espouse the virtues and fun of driving a 99. Show the other Saab owners what fun it is. you're much, MUCH more likely to see the older Saabs get restored by other Saab owners if you promote them within a regional or national club rather than just keep it to yourselves. There are practical limits to how many Saabs one can anjoy at one time, after all!
And do come out to the 20th annual Saab Owner's COnvention in Cincinnati:
