I have yet to see an balance shaft issue on the turbo Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Sun, 30 Jan 2005 16:39:52 In Reply to: Oil pan removal, turbo (?), Peter [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 30 Jan 2005 15:10:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have no clue why since I have seen so many non turbo with failed balance shaft sprockets.
And it is NOT related to oil sludge since most engines have been "clean as a whistle" when taken apart.
It's just another one of these mysteries like the 9-3/9-5 engine problems that we battle over the years, trying to figure out WHY?
You will always have some kind of varnish/discoloration in the valve cover. That is NOT sludge. It is normal patina.
When it looks like the picture or worse, that's when you should get worried and start to figure out what to do next.
If you look at the outer areas of the camshaft sprocket. That's what most engines looks like inside. A light brownish discoloration.
