Key is to check out under valve cover. NA's run at a higher compression, and some theorize this is part cause for some "sludging" problems seen here. However, I believe that oil quality / change interval is key to preventing oil related problems (which will exist if poorly maintained, or even if maintained to "saab" specs with cheap quick lube oil).
I bought a car like the one you mention 2 years ago, and it was maintained "well" meaning owner had everything replaced when went bad.... but he didn't know to do more than that, and followed saab spec 9000 mile oil changes, which has left me battling sludge ever since. Problems are that the oil pickup screen gets cloged, causing starvation, which leads to all sorts of problems.
SHould I do it again, I would not be embarassed to either myself or a certified mechanic - pull the valve cover and take a look. Also, might pop out the oil pressure relief valve and see if it is scored. This would be a sign of balance chain sprocket wear. This is the best way to tell when no other history is there (and with some problems that may come up, I feel an essential one for my next purchase).
