I bought an OBDII reader for about $110 from a part store, made by Innova, but I think I paid too much... they have some for $45, and I have seen them online and on ebay for as little as $25. My car is a '96 Not sure about OBDI though, make sure you get the right one for your car.
You can use http://www.iequus.com/obd_def.asp for the definitions of the fault codes.
I have the Haynes manual, but I would gladly pay double for a Bentley if one existed. Haynes #3512, on amazon.com or some part stores will order one for you.
