Ten or fifteen years ago I rode in a neighbor's Oldsmobile, a 98 or Regale Regency Cutlass Ultra Magna Broughamdeville SSEi DXXXZXYYXYCZCi or something. I forget exactly.

But even back then, when I was maybe 15 years old, I stood in slack-jawed amazement when I realized that the car had one digital clock in the radio display, and another digital clock in the instrument panel. GM evidently thought that the car would be better with 2 digital clocks less than 18 inches from each other.

What they didn't consider was making the displays run on the same timekeeping device. You see where I'm going with this? The clocks told different times.

GM is of the "Two Digital Clocks are Better than One" theory of engineering -- cram as much "technology" as possible into the car, no matter how well or how poorly it works. I personally am of the "The Fewer Digital Clocks, The Better" theory of engineering.

That's why GM's hot new feature is -- I am not kidding -- an amplifier input in the radio, to plug an electric guitar into. I swear I am not kidding about this. They spent money integrating an amp input into their radio, but they still haven't spent any money stopping their entire lineup of 4-cylinder engines from sounding like broken sewing machines.

Same problem as that Olds I sat in the first time I realized GM's senior management consisted of nothing but lobomized baboons. GM, to this day, thinks if it continually adds new features NOBODY ASKED FOR, it'll make people forget that the cars, overall, suck ass. Don't be fooled by fleet sales. Take out fleet sales, and GM's passenger cars are unloved and unpopular, and an emphasis on multiple digital clocks, pickup trucks that convert into SUVs, amplifier inputs, heads up displays, magnetic steering, and the rest are a big part of it.
