I'd agree with most of your assessments. I just traded in a loaded V6 2000 Passat (Man) for a 9-3 SE man loaded. The V6 performance of a manual is no longer available in a Passat, so you are forced to get the turbo 1.8. There isn't a comparison in terms of performance here, in comparing it to either the GLS or the 93. (And for what its worth, the 1.8 in base form looks very cheap on the inside. I suppose you'd expect that in a $21000 car.)

I loved my Passat; it was a great deal at $25,500. But today when you are looking for a fairly well equipped sedan with a manual transmission in a lease arrangement, the options are slight. Try to find a Maxima SE with leather. Price out a BMW 3 class with leather, and then look at the lease arrangement. The Passat 1.8 can be loaded to look nice, but it won't perform with the same zest as the other three. Honda? No V6 manual. Lease arrangements on a Volvo are terrible in this area (Buffalo, NY). The best choice might have actually been the Jag X-type my wife drives for quality/price- but at a "real" cost of $499 (including down payment plus monthlies) it was a touch too rich for me.

The Passat generally speaking has better "small amenities" (one-touch, back seat space, etc.), but when the car reaches its third year the costs of maintaining and repairing really start to catch up. Using Intellichoice's numbers, my V6 would likely have cost me over $6000 to maintain over the last three years of my contract.

I'm picking up the last black SE 93 manual in over 300 sq miles- and I'd bet on the Eastern Seaboard. Its fit and finish is better than the Maxima, although not up to par with the Passat or Jag. Luxury add-ons definitely are a step below the area, especially with things like sound system. But for a performance, manual tranny sedan on the luxury entrance, its the last Mohican available in an affordable lease.
