The Passat is a bigger car and feels clumsier than the 9-3. The Jetta is a more appropriate comparison if you are not looking for a big trunk. Also, don't forget that you get free maintenance with VWs these days which will save on service costs.
Drove a Jetta 1.8T with 5-speed vs a Passat 1.8T GLS 5-speed and the Jetta seems to accelerate noticeably more explosively. The 1.8T engine seems more overworked on the Passat. The Jetta GLI, with 200hp on tap, is even faster. I'd think Car and Driver would get 0-60mph in something like 6.3s or less if and when they test one. The 6-speed manual also seems to feel better than the 5-speed. Besides, the VR6 engine is very smooth (unlike the 1.8T and the Saab 2.0T) and has lots of low end torque. Too bad, it's not available in wagon form which I'm looking for.
The new VWs and the 9-3 are not really known for being the best handling, but the Jetta feels more modern and probably has more upgrade potential if you desire sharper handling.
I'd hold out for the new 9-3 wagon when it appears.
