I drove a 2000 Passat 1.8T auto prior to my 2001 93SE. The car was truly built like a tank, and I feel (still) like it had such a great 'weight' to it, even though it had more body-roll than a sumo wrestler. Early on I had some recall work done, and I also had the front control arms (all 27 of them...) replaced due to some suspension creaking. I really enjoyed the Passat, and planned to keep it for a long time.

Unfortunately, at the 24k mile mark, things began to go disastrously wrong. The transmission had a nasty habit of mis-shifting and bucking the car around, particularly under heavy load at about 75mph during truck-passing maneuvers. It was, quite literally, scary as hell. I had the car looked at by four different dealers/independent shop - not a single one could diagnose the problem. I continuously got error messages, and the dealership would clear them. That was a minor annoyance until...

I had my first nasty electrical/engine problem. In the middle of a U-turn on a divided highway with oncoming traffic rushing towards me, the engine and all power cut out. I was fortunate enough to have the momentum to coast off the road into the emergency lane.

It wasn't long after that when I made the decision to go with the 93. I have been behind the Saab's wheel for 7 months, and I have not had a twinge of trouble. I drive an automatic, as I spend many hours a day driving in city traffic for my job, and I feel emphatically that the Saab delivers its power far more quickly and with much more zeal than the Passat ever did. I miss the Tiptronic once in awhile, and I miss the quality of the interior of the Passat; however, I gladly get over those feelings when I give the 93 the juice and feel the tug of that fantastic motor.

Also, in terms of aesthetics, I really like driving a car that I don't see three of on every block. In Milwaukee, 3 series Bimmers and Passats are quite common. Saabs are easy to spot, but only in a few areas ($$$ neighborhoods, not where I live).

Now, I will qualify this long post by saying that my parents are in the fourth year of their Passat ownership, and they have had no problems with the car. I believe that I abused cars in a former life (bad car-ma), as all of mine have been 'Monday morning cars'. Here's hoping that the Saab breaks my bad streak...
