Yes it is. The 5W-30 Semisynth "SAAB" oil has to run out its course in the SAAB warehouses and stockrooms of the dealers before the 0W-XX appears.
Having been to Sweden(and SAAB) MANY MANY times (last visit 02/2002), it's the same product oil in the SAAB 4 litre jug (not Quart).
In Model Year '03 cars, they've gone to 0W-XX oil. "VIKINGMAN" professes it's 0W-40 oil. Steve Goldberger of NINES says no. The sticker under the hood of the NEW '03 9-3 says use Mobil ONE.
Not many oil companies are producing 0W-XX oils yet in the USA. Mobil One and Amsoil are two that I know.
But, again the basic recommendation on the '02 owners manual BEGINS with 5W-30/0W-30/5W-40 oil. In the USA the spec (from the manual) is API SJ / GF-3 and the European ACEA spec is A3-B3.
You put Mobil One 5W-30 in that ride, and unless you drag-race it on the weekends, or live in 110 F Death Valley temps, your SAAB will be just fine. If you do either of those, the opt for the extreme 0W-40 oil Mobil 1 sells.
I live in Michigan, and winter is on the way. I do not race the car, although I'd sometimes like to..... so I'm very content for now to go to Mobil1 5W-30 through the winter. Next spring, or approximately when this car turns over 5,000 miles on the ODO, I'll switch to 0W-40 for the summer heat and traffic snarls of the tourists up here.
I've driven SAAB over 25 years, and on Mobil One oil from the mid -80's (when SAAB did not endorse it )without a single incidence of oil/engine related problems or repairs. Get the idea?
The average Aero owner IMHO cannot outdrive the protection of either Mobil 1 product 5W-30 or 10W-30--formerly the basic recommendation of SAAB.
Let's examine why --ok? Mobil 1 5W-30 flows at what -46 Degrees ????
Do you REALLY think if that temperature came to your house, that you'd be even thinking about driving your SAAB ?? No way !
And Mobil 1 0W-30 flows at -50 degrees ???? Get the idea ?
0W-30 is sometimes hard for me to find, but my local Wal-Mart is starting to carry it.
