As I recall, the original Mobil 1 was 5W-20, rated for 12,500 miles. After reformulation to 5W-30, the drain interval went to 15,000. They later changed it to 25,000 miles. Shortly after Mobil got the factory fill (non-synthetic) contract, the recommeded extended drain interval disappeared from the bottles (thought the oil was still capable of extended drain). Some suspect there was some pressure by GM, which at that time had absolutely no use for synthetics. (also had no use for Al Amatuzio, since he embarassed the GM lube head at an SAE meeting, but that's another story).
>>>Why is it not factory fill in excotics like Mobil 1? Why wouldn't car manufacturers jump on this an factory fill with it in all carsbased on the benefits? Imagine the savings on cars that come with free scheduled maintance and what this would save them in Cafe' pentalties due to the mileage increases, millions $.
Possibly because AMSOIL doesn't discount their oil? Also, AMSOIL is not available worldwide, and the auto manufacturer has no way of knowing what the customer will use---ever see the proud owner of a new Mercedes buying SB oil for 40 cents a qt to save money??<g> And, the manufacturers almost never recommend a specific brand, unless it has their name on the label.
