Dick,
Thought you would have jumped on this a couple days ago, glad you joined in.
Anyone in sales promotes their product or company even if there is no profit. That's just part of sales and trying to broaded a market base. It's only good business sense and is taught in marketing 101.
I found Mobil 1 for $10 for a 5 qt container at Walmart and bought a bunch. This equates to $2/qt. I can't see how Amsoil would save me anything based on the $8+ in the catalog they sent me, even with extended drain intervals.
Everyone has a specific drain interval that makes them happy. Could Mobil 1 go longer, yes, but the marketing department would not like this, because they sell less oil. If I remember back to when Mobil 1 first came out, they touted 25K drain intervals. It was printed right on the container (I beleive this was in the mid to late 70s). If you think about it (back to marketing) why would a company promote to use less of their product? Use more, make more $$, maybe Amsoil has better morals or is making plenty of money at $8+ per quart.
Why is it not factory fill in excotics like Mobil 1? Why wouldn't car manufacturers jump on this an factory fill with it in all carsbased on the benefits? Imagine the savings on cars that come with free scheduled maintance and what this would save them in Cafe' pentalties due to the mileage increases, millions $.
I think I've beat this subject to the point it has annoyed many, but this debate has livened up the board a bit and brought out many good points.
Happy Saabing.
David M
