Over-Reving Engine?

I posted something yesterday to attempt to figure out what was going on with my car. All of a sudden when down shifting from 4th to 3rd, the RPMS shot up to 4000. When I pulled over, put car in neutral, the engine was still reving high, between 1000-2000. I turned the car off and re-started and drove off without issue,it did not happen again for the rest of the day. I have not driven today, so I am wondering if this mysterious thing will re-occur. The day prior, the car was in for rear brakes and a new battery. I don't know if there is a connection here, but it has never behaved this way since I have owned it. The car is a '99 9-3 base (manual) with 77,000 miles. Some people mentioned that the clutch might be slipping, but why would the engine continue to rev high in neutral when the clutch is not engaged and then why would re-starting the car alleviate this issue? Or was it a mis-fire on one of the injectors? I have not seen the check engine light yet either. Any additional comments on this would be appreciated.
