What REALLY irks me the most about customer service complaints is how people think that the person they talked to represents the views of the entire company. Like all the service reps are robots that spew the exact same answers.
The reality is that customer service reps are low paid and generally know very little about what they speak of. They were probably supporting refrigerators six months ago, and Saabs now. They won't say anything that might get them reprimanded or fired.
Your best recourse is to go up the chain of command and find out the official policy. Keep a level head and don't threaten anyone with a "lawsuit" (unless you have grounds for that and you're gonna go through with it).
And just for the record, in your original post you said that you are "petitioning the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to begin an investigation on a known safety defect". Excuse me but since when is a broken ventilation knob a SAFETY defect? Will it lead to personal injury or loss of control of the vehicle? The answer is NO.
