I'm sure others are furiously typing at the same time I am, but here's my take on it:
You want to keep some type of trumpet/snorkel on there so that you're pulling in cooler air from the front of the car & not the hot air from the engine compartment. No trumpet, or added holes in the box, will pull in warmed air from around the engine, which may be why you noticed a rougher idle on your pre-K&N test.
My 3" intake is all made up & ready to install as soon as I'm OOW (another 6 mos!). It looks basically like Jeff's (I used thin-walled coextruded polyethylene drain pipe ($3 for 10' from Home Despot) & a 3"-4" bell end), but I cut off the straight section of the 4" end of the bell to put a nice, air-flowing trumpet end on it. I figgerd if Saab keeps putting that feature on the end, I probably want to keep it.
