Mine's a '99 SE auto tranny, so I've the double-pass IC & 2" intake. Yours very well may already have the single-pass IC, but I don't know when they incorporated the 3" intake.
The DIY intake mod IN NO WAY changes the air path, & emulates EXACTLY what Saab went to with later model (T7?) intakes: 3" trumpet into airbox, thru filter panel, back into ducting to the turbo/IC/engine. If what you're thinking of doing changes the air path at all, then it's different from what others have done.
Oh, & when I pulled my airbox to to measure for the 3" duct, I found a lot of dirt under it. I'm guessing that keeping the trumpet end near the front of the car helps reduce the amount of dirt it sees. Since the airbox sits above the front wheel, I'll bet the wheel stirs up stuff that'll you'll pull in.
