OK. My mechanic did an oil change the other day and found a bad ball joint/control arm on one side of the car and a bad inner CV boot on the other side. The two repairs will run about $450-500 together. In addition, it needs a new strut (the current one leaks and there's a lot of noise). Another $200 or so. I'll also need winter tires this season (hey, made it through 5!) and summer tires sometime next summer. In the past few months we've replaced a motor mount and the boost controller. About $500 for that stuff.
Before this round of repairs the car had pretty much been fine. Now with about 85k on it, would I expect continued repair bills or should I just spend the next $700 and hope for the best? I HATE dumping money into a car thinking "NOW I'm done for a while" until the next $300 thing goes. Long term, the car won't meet my family's needs but it's fine right now. I had been hoping just to get it through to winter (before I had to buy tires) but if I spend on it now I'll feel 'obligated' to keep putting money into it, I think.
Keep it and fix or cut my losses now and go for a certified 9-5 wagon? It is very nice right now not having a car payment!
