I think you took an offhand remark and twisted it as negatively as possible. You were already in a negative mood and feeling put out just by the act of buying a spare part because you bit into the doom, gloom and supposed inevitability of a DIC failure. The only reason it's a "known flaw" in the car "they sold me" is 'cause the whole car is so reliable it sticks out and it gives the "half empty" folks something to post here. I suggest you also buy a spare battery, keep the box this time, as batteries go out in every car absolutely sooner or later as opposed to a small minority of DICs. Just like a DIC you can change out a battery with common hand tools.

Sounds to me like the parts manager was gonna' set one aside for you for the next time you came in and didn't appreciate your urgency for properly packaging your safety net. Or maybe there was distraction with a customer who had a more serious issue than preventative packaging?

It's hard for me as a dealership employee to get a decent box out of the parts department unless I time it perfectly. They destroy or recycle their boxes daily or they'd be overwhelemed. It's not as simple of a request as you imagined. Yea, perhaps you are being a little unfair.
