1. The bosch fuel filter is a, well, fuel filter. it is inline with your gas lines between the pump and the engine. It is a soup can sized cyclinder about 5 inches long under the passenger side about half way or 2/3s back of the car. Its partially concealed by a plastic shield that is secured by a 9/16 or maybe 10mm plastic nut. Lie down by the car and on the pass side and you'll find it has 2 fuel lines running to it, one connected, 1 to engine and 1 return. This filter prevents foreign objects from geting from your tank to your engine. After a 100k it could be getting clogged and its to cheap to not replace. It is secured by two banjo fitting bolts and you can swap it out in about 10 or 15 minutes if its not too rusty (not a prob in LA!). I buy mine from eeuroparts.com a site sponsor.
2.) I was more referring to the actuation of each gear, if the Manual trans fluid MTF is detoriated (which i can say it is if its original) you will have a difficult time engaging gears, particulary 1 and 3 in my expierence. I switched to MTF0063, a saab synthetic gearbox oil that cost 12$ a liter, gulp (6 liters required for good flush and change over). You can spend less on an alternative oil and still make a huge improvement in the quality of the shifting and the longevity of the tranny. Given the cost of a tranny R&R and my desire to use the turbos torque I spent the money on the MTF00063 and I shift and sleep better.
Also I would add that one should check the aligningment of the shifter. Its free. Pull up the boot, shift to 4th, put a small screwdriver in the hole that is, um, 'north northeast' in the aluminum shifter housing unit with the boot up. If you can't get the screwdriver that is approx the size of the hole through the housing and through the linkage below you will have to realign the shifter. This may have caused your stuck in reverse problem. Sometimes if I get stuck in a gear (rarely) I just allow the car to roll slightly and it always comes right out. This can happen when I park on a hill and the cars weight is on the tranny.
Another thing that occurred to me was that I bought a magnetic drain plug from eeuro for like 4$ that is constantly taking any metal shavings out of my circulating oil. That seems like a good idea too.
I would definitley DIY all you can if you have more time than money. I am 20 and learned everything out of nessicity from this BB and others like it. I have a haynes manual that I got from Amazon.com for about 23$ I think. These cars are suprisingly easy to work on IMHO, simple tools, and plenty of room for the most part. It just takes a willingness to get your hands a lil dirty and maybe spend some $ on some tools, harbor freight international <--- google that if you need tools, so cheap!
Glad to help, I've been helped way too many times to not speak up, especially for a starving actor!
Let us know how it goes !
