Engine Locked Up?????? Posted by Frank [Email] (#2509) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Frank) on Wed, 21 Dec 2005 19:07:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 1996 900SE (turbo) auto. with approx. 130,000 miles. Here’s my problem…I recently had the exhaust flex pipe closest to the engine repaired. The muffler shop was able to remove the exhaust and mark the pipes exactly in order replace the flex pipe and reset the pipes so there wasn’t a problem with backpressure, etc. (he said that when he talked to his supplier that it was critical to replace the pipes in the exact same length since the system is tuned to the turbo/engine exhaust output? Otherwise a problem could develop with the turbo). On the way home I did notice a whining sound and thought that it might be the turbo. When I started it up the next morning the engine had a sound very similar to a water pump bearing squeal..just not as loud as one would normally hear. It did subside once the engine heated up but you still could hear a slight whine as the accelerator increased/decreased. The very next day I had new struts put on…no problem there…but on the way back to the muffler shop to discuss whether there somehow might have been excess pressure placed on the turbo due to pipe alignment or another related issue the car suddenly went dead after I tried to go around another car in the passing gear. No loud noise or nothing unusual…immediately after it went into passing gear there was a sudden loss of power. I pulled off the side of the road and tried to restart. The car cranked very slowly and sporadically fired but never really caught. So I had it towed to the strut mechanic who tried to start it. It cranked slowly as well but then I was told the engine locked up. He tried to put a bar on the engine but with two men pulling the engine would not turn at all. (He said that in his 18 years in the business he always was able to turn and engine by hand and then suggested dropping the pan to take a better look. )
I don’t understand the poor cranking issue unless something was binding and that the battery lacked sufficient power. Could it be related to the water pump? I really need an expert advise on this one since I may have to send it the junkyard if it is internal to the engine $$$.
Can anyone lend their opinion as to what you might believe is wrong…is there a trick to turning the engine by hand? (He said that in his 18 years in the business he always was able to turn and engine by hand and then suggested dropping the pan to take a better look.)
