All of that chatter about pipe lengths and tuning is complete BS. The pressure pulses reflect off of the turbo and after that the only issue is flow resistance. The distance to the turbo is too short to have any impact on tuning in the RPM ranges of this engine.
If the engine is tight, the current draw on the starter motor would be high. Constant or near term cranking attempts are not good for the starter!
Water pump would not have any impact on the engine itself. If it stopped pumping then an overheat would occur and you would know about that. The slack adjusted can be used to release the belt and the accessories turned by hand to confirm that they are siezed and working through the belt.
Oil level ok, oil smells ok?
Pull plugs and look for signs ok oil or mechaical damage.
