Alternators tend to be a bit of a ripoff at the Saab dealer.
A remanufactured unit goes for $150-$200 depending on where you get it, and any decent service shop can put it in. I installed one remanufactured by Beck-Arnley myself, but it was a lot of work because of where it is located. Later I found out that Tires Plus (I think they are a national chain) only charges about 1.25 hrs labor.
In case you are reluctant to install a remanufactured part, a friendly service manager at a GM/Saab dealership told me that even OEM Saab alternators are usually remanufactured (Saab has a core charge if you just want to pick one up.
I also found out that GM has "consolidated" alternator part numbers, meaning that you cannot get the original 90-Amp unit for a 4-cyl engine anyway, they only sell the 120-Amp versions now. In other words, if you ask nicely, even a reputable GM/Saab dealer employee was embarrassed to charge me the 900+ bucks.
The 90-Amp alternator is a pretty generic Bosch part, which was used by Saab and Volvo with slightly different shells and mounting brackets. (Advance Auto Parts has quite a selection, including the same Bosch-remanufactured 120-Amp part Saab now uses)
