If the bearings are OK when it stops working (you can usually tell that by rotating it by hand with the cable off), then it is most likely the brushes that wore out. The brush and voltage regulator assembly can be replaced, and is about half the price of the alternator. Europarts sells it as a separate part, so do other stores.
I did the best I could to document the details, and there are other threads here on various ways to get to it. If you plan on replacing it yourself, I would suggest getting one with a pulley, because it can be very difficult to get it off the old one.
