All of the suspension components with the exception of the stanchion arms had been replaced prior to the clunk caused by ovaling. That includes control arms with poly bushings and new balljoints, struts, mounts, endlinks, thrust bearings and tie rod 'screws' and ends. Most of the noise I have seen has been caused by the stanchion arm (rearmost subfframe bolts) being under torqued. The dealer mentioned the 'sleeves' in the stanchion bushing rotting and the stanchion bolts 'ovaling'. The ovaling is obvious after the removal of the rear most subframe bolts. I could see much more of the bushing than just the hole and yes they were indeed 'out of spec'. Perhaps the dealer is a bit overzealous with the subframe replacement, but this work was done by me, I can verify the worn condition as described. I think it has to do with the ridiculously bad roads we have around here (Ohio), the design of the stanchion, and the age of the vehicle. I replaced the subframe with a junkyard special and the noise is gone. No this is not a 'torque' issue in my case, they were torqued correctly prior to failure.( I have 120k miles on my 2000). The master tech at the local dealer complains about the design. They tend to think about 80k is the lifespan around here.
