The world is changing with internet shopping and in the "old days" it was not common at all that customers brought their own parts in.

Most car repair shops are open so that they can make money for themself and that they can live a decent life and have some money over for retirement too.

Kind of like what most other professions/companies also have in their mind.

A car repair shop makes their money on labor and profit on parts to pay for their whole operation and salaries.
If the profit on parts are completly cut out from them, they might have make it up in labor instead, either by raising the shop labor rate or charge more time.

The best way to avoid mistakes is to discuss everything up front before they start the work.

Labor rates are not "written in stone" and shops might use different labor rates for the same job all depending on what they feel is needed.

It is many, many times when I have gotten customers in that had taken their car to a big chain generic shop where they charged twice or more in labor than I do.

A lot of times they charge more labor since their mechanics are not familiar with the car and don't have the books or tools for it.

Since I have the books,tools and knowledge, I can charge less and still survive.
Hmm, memo to myself. I think I need to revise my strategy.
