Question about dealing with insurance

Hi everyone! Normally, I'm over at the 9000 BB finding tips on keeping my Aero going, but something's come up with our normally reliable 97 900 SE that demands attention.
A few weeks ago, my wife was involved in an accident. She's fine, she came through without even a scratch. The Saab didn't look too bad, either; it just looked like it'd need a new bumper, headlight, and a corner of the hood banged out.
Our insurance (Geico), however, came back and said that the damage would cost $3441 to repair, and that the vehicle is worth $3206, and that they were going to total the vehicle.
My wife and I have been arguing with them for weeks on both fronts. We have collected lots of evidence that the vehicle is worth more (we argue it's worth more like $4200 due to the meticulous care we've invested in it), and that the repair estimate is excessive (we'll be having another estimate done next week). The adjuster, however, has told us on both counts that those things won't matter. They are refusing to even look at our competing quotes and will total the car, and that's that.
My wife, who is now sold on the superior handling and safety of her Saab, just wants her car fixed, without having it branded with a salvage title. Repair shops that we've talked to suggested that we ask Geico for the max repair allowance for the vehicle as a settlement provided the vehicle's title not be altered. Geico, again, is refusing to do this.
Oh yeah, the other driver, the one who caused the accident, took off, so we're left to only deal with our own insurance. We've been Geico customers for over 10 years (with 3 cars insured) and this is our first collision claim. We're really frustrated with what we see as lousy and in our opinion worthless service.
For those of you who have been in this situation, is this typical behavior from an insurance company, or just typical for Geico? Has anyone fought these guys and won? If so, what worked for you?
Thanks much!
Ben
