Thanks all for your input. Our tempers have cooled a little, and by way of reflection, we've realized that most of our outrage came from what seemed like really lousy customer service.
If they had even budged a little, given us a $200 more for being in good condition, or because we've been a customer for over a decade, we'd have been mollified. We would have at least felt like we got something. But they were always dancing around the issue at first when I was asking about a re-assessment, and then finally just saying no. In the end, they've not budged a single cent.
Not once during this process did it feel like they were working with us, it always felt like "here's what we're going to give you and you can take it or not." No negotiating, not even "Sorry, but as a policy, we just don't do that", just "No."
The breaking point was when the head adjuster laughed at my wife (over the phone) when she asked for his supervisor and that she wasn't satisfied with the resolution of the claim. That moment pretty well defines their attitude. It's not a service/customer relationship at all. There's no customer service to speak of at the claims office.
We've still got some legwork to do, and we are going to pursue this further up the chain of command at Geico. Following the incident on the phone, my wife is unlikely to give up until she's extracted her pound of flesh. Well, maybe not a pound, but a #6 mellonballer will do.
Thanks guys!
Cheers,
Ben
