Update on wheel bearing failure...lower control arms

If you will recall, I posted about my possible catastrophic wheel bearing failure a few days ago. As it turns out, a rock was caught between the brake rotor and the shield. They had to take the caliper and rotor off in order to fish that little stone out.
While doing all of this they discovered that I have worn lower control arm bushings. What's interesting about this is that it is the bushings where the control arm attaches to the subframe that are worn. My mechanic tells me that I have some time to plan for this $1,000 repair, but that I shouldn't drive too far in the mean time. He says the other bushings and the ball joints are all tight. They've talked me into replacing the whole control arm since the ball joints are integrated into this part, and I concur. My questions are: 1. should I use poly bushings? 2. Is there any chance that these particular bushings are causing the boaty feeling in my steering and the vibrations I feel in the front end between 50 and 65 mph?
My mechanic seems to think that poly bushings will fail much more quickly than stock rubber bushings. Is this true?
