I would go for the poly bushings. If the outer/lower bushings are good and the ball joint is good, I don't see a reason to not do it. It's really not even a super hard job to do in a DIY sense, if you have the time. I would even venture to say that you should do the lower/outer bushings as well (depending on how many miles you think you have left in the ball joints.) Last month I did this job on my '99 9-3 se and it has given new life the car. It's a pleasure to drive now. As far as the life span of the poly.....I don't know. But I do know that they would be cheap and easy to replace if they wore out in xxxx amount of miles. Your old ball joints might wear out before the poly. Last but not least. I would think that the inner bushings could be replaced with the poly with the control arm still attached at the ball joint (though you may as well repack the ball joint boot during this whole thing.)
