Well, the age of a ball joint doesn't really play a role in its service life, unless a car has exceptionally low mileage and is relatively old. These are a simple ball and cup joint, that are lubed for life and really only wear with use; the ball joints would most likely serve well for several thousand miles. My '97 has 135,000 miles on it and the ball joints were still fairly tight when I upgraded my bushings a few months ago. With that said, the entire control arm has to come out to replace the bushings, so it certainly isn't foolish to replace the whole thing since there isn't any extra labor involved. However, 4-5 hours labor for this job is EXCESSIVE and I would walk away laughing if any shop told me it would take them that long to complete the job. If the average do-it-yourself'r can undertake this job, in their driveway, without air tools or a lift, in 2-3 hours, no shop on the planet should be quoting 4-5 hours.
I'll lay out the job for you:
Jack the car and secure the rear wheels
remove the front wheels
Remove the nut securing each stabilizer bar end link to the control arm
Remove the nut on each ball joint
Break each ball joint loose from the steering knuckle
remove the bolt securing each stanchion arm to the control arm
remove the bolt securing each control arm to the front sub-frame.
Reinstall new control arms with the new bushings already installed.
All this can be completed with a 1/2" drive ratchet, a 3/8" drive ratchet, an 18mm wrench, three sockets, a ball joint separator, and a hammer, and was the easiest ball joint replacement I've ever done.
Of course, it's your money so it doesn't affect any of us; but it really seems like you're being taken advantage of.
