When I recently bought my '96 900SE (62K miles at the time), I also debated with getting an extended warranty. In the end I chose not too as the independent SAAB mechanic I took the car to prior to the purchase said it was in execellent mechanical shape. As weird as it may sound, I actually liked the fact that it was due for a 65K service soon - this way I could get the work done and have somewhat of a baseline to start from.
The net-net is that you have to go with your gut - some people swear by the warranties and others swear against them. In my opinion, if you stay on top of the maintenance and have a competent mechanic you trust, you should be in good shape.
SAABs definetely require the owner to be diligent about maintenance but I think they more than make up for it in the performance and satisfaction they provide.
Good luck.
