I found one of the earlier posted comments interesting. I did not yet own a Saab when I came to this buulletin board. I came to learn what to expect. Seems to me many are in the same boat. I see a lot of postings of people trying to find out what to expect.

I greatly enjoy my 97' SETC Talladaga but there is little doubt in my mind Saabs come from the factory predisposed to be lemons. Some are better than others but just look at the facts. My mother purchased a 92' Lexus several years ago (all in Canadian Dollars) and was offered an extended warranty of about $900 for a couple years. My sister about the same with a 94 Camry (almost the same car) and CHEAP extended warranty. When I bought my car the dealer wanted about $2800 while it was still under warranty and would have extended it for a couple years. After the warranty expired it would go to $3200. There is a good reason for this.

I do much of my own work and a lot of research to do it right; and with great thanks to those who contribute to the board I've got away with some cheap fixes.

So lets start with $800US for the repair to the conv top assembly I fixed with a hose clamp. The battery does not last long in Canadian winters because of the added load of electronics that run it down. When this happens you get the dreaded "check engine/check gearbox", parts alone in Canada for the tranny range switch $650; $250 for labour. The dealer told me they had replaced a lot of tranny range switches last year. Battery was replaced last year for about $120 and had to be changed again by the dealer (under warranty) again today as it failed a load test because the mechanic did not grease the posts so the battery was no longer holding a charge. By the way, dealer service is great at Saab. They don't know what their doing but they treat you well while their doing it.

To continue, I have an OBD-2 scanner and while analysing the engine I finally found what was making the car shudder at idle occasionally. An intermittant problem caused by a malfunction in the MAF circuit. It is not causing a trouble light, is not being held in memory of the cars computer but I captured it as an intermittant fault. Saab could not analyse this after having been in repeatedly and done all kinds of cleaning and tests. It took almost an hour to capture the fault. The fix would cost over $600 for the part but is not a real problem right now. The mechanic at Saab told me he has replaced a lot of these recently.

About 6 months ago I let the dealer do my brake work, front and read pads, 2 new rotors up front and repair to a b-pipe (exhuast), a bit over $1000. The b-pipe had already been repaired several times N/C.

As infered earlier by others, it is the nature of this complex car to have complex car to have complex and expensive problems. Some people are luckier than others. Buy it because you want to enjoy a unique vehicle that is fun to drive and safe. If you are trying to budget for it but a car that rates as dependable in reviews or books.

Hope that helps.

Michael B.
