Perhaps you don't have a hydraulic clutch and the clutch cable slack adjuster is not working as it should. You reach under the under-hood fusebox and grab the outer jacket and pull it back a bit. This has worked for some. I get the impression that the clutch is not disenguaging properly when you put the petal down.
If you had clutch wear, I would not expect shift grinding, I would expect that you would feel the clutch slip in 3rd gear full throttle and on boost.
And grinding when shifting can be from gear linkage mis-adjustment or the failure of a plastic bushing in the linkage. And that bushing is known to fail with over-exuberant shifting technique.
Clutch wear is mostly determined by clutch technique. The variation between drivers is huge. And city driving VS highway driving makes statements about wear at any given miles, such as 60K, quite meaningless. Does anyone else drive the vehicle? Have you tied blaming your wife? :)
And your engine rear seal is probably weeping oil now and will leak badly by 90 or 100K. The only way to replace the seal is to pull the trany, clutch and flywheel. So when that happens, the clutch is replaced while things are apart as the larbor is so expensive at that point. So if you end up getting a new clutch, you need the new engine seal, and replace the 4 trany seals or at least the trany input seal for sure.
So try helping the cable's built in slack adjuster, if you have a cable clutch, and investigate the linkage problems before you drop $1100... which sounds about right.
