Maybe it was the clutch cable they replaced.
The reverse gear pop out is fairly common, and one thing that is the contributing factor is that the clutch cable goes bad, making the driver put more force in when shifting gear.
Some of the shifter forks inside the transmission is pretty weak and when forced to work for a long time, they bend and stop throwing the reverse gear all the way in. This way the reverse gear slowly wear out.
