I own both cars - '97 900SE w/ 69k and 900S w/ 95k. Fuel efficiency is the same. Manual transmission is what will get you better efficiency... and more POWER when matched w/ turbo. Look at the torque reatings. The auto tranny requires the turbo to be detuned a bit.
Also, the stereo with the additional front door 6" speakers in the SE is much better and the auto climate control is 'slicker' though no more effective.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, the turbo is not a major maintenance item... AND (and search this board and you will see) the 2.0 engine is more reliable then the 2.3. The 2.3 has oil/lubrication 'issues'.
The one plus for the '97 S model is the 15" 3 spoke wheels are better looking, more functional, and ride better than the 16" viking wheels. Plus you can find many more reasonable (and comfortable) tire selections. So get the SE, and find on ebay or this site some 15" wheels to go with it.
