I have not read a single post about the 900S having engine-related issues that caused it not to start whereas I have read posts about the Direct Ignition Cassette on the turbo, and other type things with boost not coming as expected. My 2.3L has no lube problems, doesn't burn a drop of oil and still runs like new. If I want a little more performance, I use higher octane fuel.
If you drive normally, the 2.3L has a lot of torque (relatively speaking), before the turbo 2.0 L starts spooling up. I notice a few torque sweet spots on my car around 2,200 rpm and 2,600 rpm.
Earlier posts from a while ago have indicated that the 2.3L was built to handle a turbo (for the 9000), so without one, it is even more durable.
The only reasons I would get an older turbo 2.0L vs. a newer 2.3L NA is if you carry many people or loads often in warm weather (with A/C on). This is where I feel my engine is deficient. Otherwise, I am totally happy. I have averaged 26.7 mpg in 6+ years of 40% city, 60% highway driving with an automatic tranny.
By the way, I never met an auto climate control that actually made life easier than manual climate control, and you can upgrade the stereo yourself.
