Dean,
I agree that the seal failing on a previous car may not have been anything to do with synthetic oil. It was a British car and not built to German or Swedish standards! Sad comment on UK cars a while ago.
However, it is a well known fact that after a period of time running on mineral based oil, synthetic oil performs a clean up of all the deposits in the engine. This includes the oil seals commonly leading to seepage or mild leaks. These are rarely significant enough to trouble an owner and the benefits of synthetic more than outweigh having a few stains on the side of the engine.
I'm a firm believer in synthetics and have been doing so for over 300,000 miles in various cars.
