Re did the whole kitchen 3 years ago and went with granite for the counter top. Don't regret it now.
We were planning to use Corian but too some people warned us because it can melt if you accidently put a too hot pot on the surface and the price tag for our slab would be around $5000.00
I was lucky enough to have a friend with a marble and tile shop and he fixed me up with a beatyful granite slab for $2500.00. Otherwise Granite and Corian is pretty much the same price.
But if you use Granite, be sure to seal it carefully with a liquid called "bullet proof".
I thought I had done a big bobo the week after we had the slab installed and it was time for baking the Christmas bread.
As usual I rolled out the dough on the contertop for kneeing and when I was done, I had this huge blobs of grease stains in the granite. The installer had only used a cheaper seal liquid.
Luckily I managed to wipe the counter clean and soaked it with bullet proof. Haven't had any problems since.
Another problem that arise if you do baking by hand, is that the Granite is always cold and that kills the yeast in the bread. So I solved that by using an old fashioned baking board made out of plywood sheet. That way the cold Granite doesn't get to the bread.
