I had granite countertops installed in our 2.5yo house. If you can afford it, go for it.
When clean, the glossy surface is an awesomely beatiful display of nature. Granite and trees are everywhere here, so granite countertops and wood cupboards are beautiful and long lasting natural materials to be proud of.
Coriane was more expensive, but more stain resistant. I don't intend to spill red wine or cut beets on my countertops anyhow. The ability of the granite to hold hot pans and dishes is nice, especially for big things like hot pizza pans which needs a big space to lay flat for cutting and serving.
Ask for splash-guard pieces to be made as well. These would go along the counter-top/back-wall interface. This should be little or no additional cost as the granite sheet is bigger than the counter and this can and should be made of the scrap so that it matches well. Every piece of granite is different. While you're at it, get a sink that mounts underneath the granite, so you have a clean interface between those two with no lip on top. The persons preparing your granite will cut a hole for the sink.
