I have a late father-in-law (ex electrician) and an uncle (retired plumber) who always made a good living and retired comfortably.
Ya gotta decide what you WANT to do. Maybe you wouldn't be happy being a plumber regardless of the amount of money you could earn. But don't rule out taking on a trade thinking that you won't make enough to survive. And don't confuse "manual labour" with "skilled trade"; one needs training (even if it's ad hoc, a couple years apprenticed to a journeyman) and the other doesn't.
