As someone who is self-employed, I appreciate that the $65 to $100/hr you pay a tradesman does not all go to his pocket. Your basic self-employed tradesman has to pay out...
Health insurance
Liability insurance
Tools
Truck and equipment payments
Ongoing training
Marketing and advertising expenses
Professional fees (for lawyers, accountants)
Workman's comp (if he/she has employees)
Salaries (for any employees)
Self-employment tax (because an employer isn't paying half of social security)
Other business loans
etc, etc.
And oh yeah...no paid vacations.
Who knows what the profit margin is, but the long term side of it can also be health issues as they get older that us office bound types are less likely to have.
Pay the man or do it yourself.
