People with the inclination and ability to do skilled manual work have always been in demand and always will be. No reason they can't make good money. I got all my spending money in college fixing Volkswagens. It was my own business and the cash was nice.
But it taught me that while I'm a decent "wrench" I wouldn't be happy doing it for a living. I'm good at electrical stuff but I really don't want to be an electrician. But I really don't balk at paying someone to do stuff. They have to live too, and it's worth paying people to do things you can't or don't know how to do. And yep, plumbers do have an interesting business model. Then again, when a clogged main soaks them in poop it's not such a good deal. Of all the trades, it's probably the simplest one, but most people shy away from doing plumbing work, and plumbers grin all the way to their boat while driving a nice E-class benz. (like the guy who did my well 4 years ago--but he's also the best around.)
As Les notes, you have to pick what you WANT to do that keeps you happy. We all have a number of things like that and most people go thru several "careers."
