What is so hard about merging?

It happens fairly often. Merging onto the bumper to bumper highway today, a couple people in front of me "blew the cue" and entered the lane far too soon...there was a whole lot of merging lane to go. So a couple cars, including me, went around the cue blowers to the end of the merging lane, where there was much anger and honking, because apparently now I have become the bad guy for riding out the merge lane. I know these things are kind of esoteric, and it's a case by case thing, judging traffic flow etc. But these particular cue blowers reeeally blew the cue, and I thought I made the right decision...going to the "generally understood mergepoint." I've begun to see signs posted that say "stay in lane until merge point" so that leads me to believe that this is an issue, and has been thought about by traffic law people. So, I bear that in mind, and always try to ride out the lane as much as possible. What do you guys do? I just want to reprezent the best I can out there!
