My thoughts - If traffic is moving smoothly, merge where there's a big gap. Here in IL, the merge lanes are long and all that is fair - but do not merge in the cross-hatched area as the angle to oncoming traffic is too great for you to see oncoming traffic and for them to see you. Anything you do to cause an abrupt stop in otherwise good flow of traffic is selfish and usually causes needless danger. If traffic is crawling, cars should use all available space minus the shoulders. Forcibly changing early just backs traffic up further leaving an empty, unused lane. Example - after passing through an intersection with lights, where 3 lanes merge into 2 because of an accident, it's important to get as many cars through the light as possible. That said, I will always let ONE guy in and everyone should do the same. If everyone has to be too defensive in merging, we will be there for hours.
