I have a big problem with hating "line-skippers" even though the engineer in me knows that the best way to make traffic flow is to use as much road as possible. In the example cited by VaSnaab - it makes the most sense to merge in a zipper-fashion at the very end. I still get irritated when I see people fly by, but it does make the most sense.
I have started taking advantage of this - at intersections where 2 lanes become 1 on the other side, for example, it's far better for people to line up in both lanes and get through the light, THEN merge, than it is to think you're doing the intelligent thing by getting in the surviving lane early and leaving the other empty. And it's true that when merging, the best place to merge is at the end of the ramp. Period.
I think it's the sense of entitlement that comes with driving on the highway - "I'm already on it and have been waiting in the traffic, you shouldn't get to skip ahead just because you're just now entering it"
One thing that does irritate me is something I face in my commute. The left lane becomes an exit only lane, and is well marked 2 miles in advance of the exit. But traffic going straight (onto the Beltway from I-270) gets backed up. So a select few arse-holes jump in the fast moving, exiting left lane, and then hold us legitimate exiters at the very end when they try desperately to squeeze into stopped traffic at the split point. That drives me bonkers. Their merging is part of the problem causing the slow-down in the first place, and they block the exit lane when they have to slam on their brakes at the split and wait for some kind (ignorant) soul to let them merge in.
