it would help if you describe exactly what you want to do. Unfortunately you really can't get away with technical terms.
What operating system(s), Mac or Windows ?
Does your laptop already have a wireless card built in ? I guess if you have used the laptop in a wireless environment then yes, you laptop is already equipped with a wireless card. If so, then do you know what type, 802.11b or 802.11g or something else ?
Do you just want wireless networking and file sharing or do you need to access the internet by both machines through your stationary PC ? If you have DSL or cable modem with the desktop, does it have a Ethernet connection as suggested by Bill.
Are you going to use the laptop in the same room as your desktop ? If so, and if the Ethernet card isn't used by the cable/DSL modem you probably don't need wireless networking. If you want to roam with the laptop inside the house, then yes, you need wireless.
Does you cable/DSL modem have a built-in router (wireless or otherwise) ?
Given that you only mentioned two computers, a laptop and a PC (I presume it is a desktop), it should be relatively easy if your laptop already has a wireless card.
Let know what you need and I'm sure you have more than a few suggestions 8-).
