Jono,
I'm guessing you get access to the Internet via DSL/cable modem. This is small black box that plugs into the cable line or phone line and came from your ISP. This box probably has a bunch of ports on the back, right now though its only the dell desktop that's plugged into the "eth" or "ethernet" port on the modem. You need to buy a wireless base station/router. I bought the cheapest one available at the time, a d-link (model DI-514) visible at the link below - I got it at BestBuy for $30 after the rebate,
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000088NO8/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000088NO8&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork
This router plugs into the cable/DSL modem and your desktop plugs into the router. The router has 4 ports, so if you wanted you could actually plug in 4 desktops to the router.
There's an install CD that comes with the router that I found very easy to understand. Installation took ~5 minutes.
Some people will probably quibble about different standards, 802.11b vs 802.11g. ".11g" is a slightly faster (and more expensive to setup) protocol for data transmission, but both standards are slower than your cable modem so in practice it really doesn't matter which you get unless you're moving massive amounts of data from desktop to laptop every day.
good luck
nt
ps My DSL modem came from qwest with a 802.11g transmitter - you might check your modem to see if it already has this feature.
