Whole situation smells fishy

The 9-5 engine has had problems with its lubrication system. My '01 turbo bearing gave out because of it, but other engines have had complete failures. Since both the engine and the turbo both receive oil from the same troublesome lubrication system, they both could have failed simultaneously. BTW, it's now recommended that you run full synthetic motor oil in the 9-5 engine, for this reason. I'm using a 5000 mile oil change interval.
I agree that it is extremely unlikely for metal fragments from a turbocharger failure to be able to reach the intake manifold. However, if this did happen, your intercooler should be full of metal. It's not an easy thing to check, but if it's empty, you have your answer and your proof. Unless your insurance company doesn't know anything about turbocharged engines, which is a distinct possibility.
I agree with the water pump analogy. The turbocharger (note it's one word, not two) may be a bolt-on component, but it's clearly part of the engine. It came from the factory that way.
