With the salvaged car, you have the opportunity to know what was damaged, what was repaired. Another used car could have had worse structural damage but, because of the cost-to-value ratio, was not totalled but was repaired without record. In fact, ANY car could have had MULTIPLE collisions which you have no way to learn about.
My son was a claims adjustor for State Farm for several years. A car is totalled when the repair value exceeds about 60% of the resell value. Or when a customer demands it and an adjustor wants to make the customer go away. Or when a customer rejects the repairs as unsatisfactory. Or when the car belongs to a claims adjustor's family. A total does NOT mean that any frame damage occurred. In fact, it's more likely that one will be totaled for air bags deploying than for any other damage.
