I'm a pretty laid back guy, but there's two things in life that drive me insane. One is things that don't work as advertised. The other is poorly written or incomplete directions. I'm trying to get a wireless router and it's security features set up, and it has managed to combine both of those pet peeves in one infuriating little plastic box.
I've got a brand new Linksys WRT54G router, and an old Linksys WPC11 notebook adapter. The adapter has been used for months in hotels, airports, etc, no problems.
First the router just wouldn't connect to the internet through the DSL modem. The setup CD was completely worthless, but a call to Verizon tech support got things working correctly.
Now I've got the router "working" in that I can plug my laptop into it and get on the web. I can also use the wireless card, as long as I keep the security disabled. Once I turn on the security using the 192.168.1.1 control page, the thing cuts off the wireless card connection. Except when it just mysteriously reappears for a minute or two from time to time. The guy on the Linksys line told me that since my wireless card was out of warranty, he couldn't help me. Offered "premium" tech support at $30 or something but I figured I'd try to get some free help before resorting to that.
So I've figured out how to turn the security on on the router, get the WEP key and whatnot, but can't for the life of me figure out how to get that info into the laptop so the two things will work together. FWIW, when I open the wireless monitor program on the laptop, it shows no wireless networks - even when I'm using the wireless network. I try the "site survey" and nothing shows up. It also says "WPC11 is not installed" or "WPC11 is inactive" despite the fact that it's plugged in, I'm using their software, and I'm actually using the card at that moment.
If I hit the "secure easy setup" button on the router, the router and wireless card make some kind of connection - again it doesn't show up in the wireless monitor program, and the connection disappears after a few minutes. I have no clue what the SES button is supposed to be doing or how it works, because the Linksys documentation is abysmal.
So there you go. Anybody have helpful hints? Words of encouragement? I'm gonna go run some errands and chill before I send this thing out a window.
